Tarrytown, NY
The Village
The little village of Tarrytown may not sound familiar to all New Yorkers. Growing up in Westchester I knew of it by name, but not by much else! I knew it was one of the hillside towns right on the Hudson, but I didn’t realize it is actually one of three villages in the town of Greenburgh. Sleepy Hollow to the north, Tarrytown in the middle, and Irvington just south. All nestled on the bank of the Hudson river.
The town is 40 minutes north of NYC, whether by car or by train on the Metro-North from Grand Central Station. It’s a large commuter hub, and the train station is located by the riverfront at the bottom of the hilltop town.
The main commercial businesses like the restaurants and shops are mostly on Main Street and Broadway. But in recent years the town has experienced a huge expansion with the development of Hudson Harbor. Located on the river, these luxury townhomes and residences have beautiful views of the Mario Cuomo Bridge and of the Hudson. It has attracted many former New York City residents looking to find a little more space without a long commute.
Dare I say this area is up and coming!
Shops & Restaurants.
There are so many businesses on Main Street including clothing boutiques, home decor shops, and vintage stores.
Walking through town there is no shortage of places to grab a cup of coffee, a quick bite, or a fancier dining experience in town for a good meal.
Here were some good options I scoped out!
Coffee
Tarrytown Music Hall
Tarrytown Music Hall is one of the oldest venues in the area if not the country! It’s located right on Main Street in a historic building, and despite its small size it actually gets some great performers! The events range from comedians to bands, musicians, public speakers, and more.
I haven’t been to a show here before, but I’d love to support it in the future when they are able to reopen. I plan to get some tickets when things are normal again!
RiverMarket Bar & Kitchen
We made reservations for lunch at RiverMarket, which is located in the housing development of Hudson Harbor. My family has gone here a few times and raved about the unpretentious but high caliber dining, so I was excited to try it!
The menu has a great variety - brunch dishes, indulging appetizers, and healthy options like salad. But I especially love the idea of the delicious pizzas on the menu baked fresh in their huge brick oven.
Walk the Riverfront
You can access the scenic riverwalk along the Hudson right from Tarrytown. It’s a beautiful trail with great views! It’s good for runs, biking, walking the dog, or just taking a stroll with your crew!
Things to Do in the Area
Here are some other local activities and places to explore in Tarrytown.
Lyndhurst Mansion: The building is currently closed for the season but the grounds are open! With so much to see across 67 acres, you may want to schedule one of the several landscape tours!
Kykuit - The Rockefeller Estate: Just north of Tarrytown in the village of Sleepy Hollow. This property belonged to four generations of Rockefellers before becoming a historic landmark. I used to come here with my family when I was little and always enjoyed the tours!
Lighthouse at Sleepy Hollow: This lighthouse built in 1883 was operated by 12 different lightkeepers for almost 80 years before the lights from the Tappan Zee bridge made it obsolete. We took a class trip here once and toured the structure, then walked the riverfront park!
Mario Cuomo Bridge: You can access the bridge for a nice long run or walk across the Hudson at the Westchester Landing! It’s 6 miles over the water round trip.
Washington Irving’s Sunnyside: Best put as a whimsical hilltop estate built by Washington Irving, author of all the local Westchester favorites like the Headless Horseman and Rip Van Winkel!
Philipsburg Manor: Also the site of many girl scout trips, and Sundays with my family! This historic manor in Sleepy Hollow dates back to 1750. It has a great mix of artifacts and replicas from the time period, and I’ve always loved touring the property and learning about daily life during colonial America.
So definitely check out Tarrytown on the Hudson! I hope you enjoyed this idea for another quick day trip from NYC.
